Writing Samples: Final Boss Faceoffs

from Eclipse Breaker.
Combat dialogue. Action-focused, defiant, intense.

Context: In the roguelite Eclipse Breaker, the hero Ember strives to reach a final battle against Solara, traitorous goddess of the Sun. A former paladin of Solara, Ember had been on a quest to find who stole the Sun from the sky, eventually tracing it to Solara herself. But before her party could confront the goddess, Ember became frozen in time (because the player stopped playing), and twenty-five years passed as the sunless world fell to neglect and ruin. Though the circumstances evolve over the course of the story, in every run the player’s ultimate goal is to defeat Solara. These lines are excerpted from dialogue that plays before and during these final confrontations.

EMBER
High Goddess Solara, most revered guardian of the Sun, hear my words.
I'm coming to kill you.
SOLARA
Ember. So eager to return to your Goddess that you've carved a bloody path through the Divine Realms.
Here to lament your folly and beg penance, no doubt?

EMBER
You must know why I'm here, Solara the All-Seeing.
I'm bringing back the Sun. And if you stand in my way, I will end you.

SOLARA
Attempt to claim what is mine, and I will destroy you. Your meager wrath will return upon you a thousandfold until you are humbled and cleansed.

EMBER
Good. I was hoping I'd get to kill you.
Try and smite me, Solara. Let's see what you've got.
SOLARA
Ember, my devoted Paladin. My lost lamb. I had wished to spare you from seeing my true power. Alas.

The Sun burns, Ember. It annihilates.

You have pushed my loathing past the breaking point, Ember. It is intolerable. There is no mercy left within me.

I am finished with you. Begone.
EMBER
I can't kill you, but I can annoy you. I can hurt you.
And I'll keep doing it until you bring back the Sun. Even if it takes my whole life.

SOLARA
FOOL! Glorify your struggle all you wish. It is nothing more than the thrashing of a dumb, dying beast.

EMBER
How dare you call us doomed, when it's your selfishness that dooms us. You don't deserve the Sun, Solara. And I won't rest until you give it back.

SOLARA
Haha. Hahahahaha! Perhaps I do not deserve the Sun. But you… I shall show you what you deserve.
EMBER
You're no Goddess. You're a monster.

SOLARA
I am. I oppose everything I once stood for.
But better to live as a monster than disappear into nothingness.

EMBER
I swore an oath to destroy monsters, Solara. I swore that to you.
Bit by bit, I'll keep striking you down until there's nothing left.
SOLARA
I am the despair of this broken world. When the pitiful masses curse their fate, they worship me.

Show me, Ember. Show me your will. Show me every last hope of humanity.
Here and now, we will end it all.
SOLARA
You. You are alive?

EMBER
Guess we're both hard to kill. We have that much in common.

SOLARA
Draw your sword, then. Keep your promise: this ends now.
