Writing Samples: Hollow Victory

from Eclipse Breaker.
Cutscene. Dramatic, Heartfelt, Cathartic.

Context: In the first act of Eclipse Breaker, Solara is striving to complete the quest abandoned when she was frozen in time 25 years ago: defeating the traitor goddess Solara and bringing the stolen Sun back to humanity. She pushes aside all her grief and guilt over losing the world she once knew, believing that if she can simply defeat Solara it will fix everything. But once she finally defeats Solara, she finds that it isn’t so simple: if she kills the goddess, the Sun will disappear forever. She leaves frustrated and empty-handed, and returns to the Temple of the Gate where her friend the priestess Sylphie awaits.

EMBER
…

Ember remained kneeling on the gateway portal, staring at the temple floor.

EMBER
Damn it all…

SYLPHIE
Ember? What's wrong?
I know it must be hard to die in the Divine Realm and end up here, but… you're usually pretty good at shaking it off.

EMBER
Sylphie, I… I've failed.
I beat Solara, but… I can't really help anyone. I can't bring back the Sun.

SYLPHIE
Huh? Ember, nobody was expecting you to bring back the Sun.

EMBER
I expected it! I'm the Reclaimer of Light!
Everyone was counting on me.

I could have brought back the Sun, back then. I should have, but… then I froze.
I should have slain Solara, spared you all this pain, all this bullshit.

I know I could have done it, if I just had the chance. And now I'm still the same person, and I'm still just as strong, but… I can do nothing.

Things will never go back to the way they were. There's no point in fighting.

I don't belong here. I'm a relic that deserves to be forgotten. I'm worthless.

SYLPHIE
Ember… don't say that.

After a slight beat, the dark-lord-turned-Mayor Galax arrives.

GALAX
Well, this isn't the celebration I was expecting after you gave Solara the beating she so thoroughly deserves.

You should be proud, Ember. You accomplished something we had stopped believing was possible. But bringing back the Sun is… another matter.

You thought we never tried fighting Solara? She is inextricably tied to the Sun, so lamentably, there is…

Wait a minute. What's that you're holding?

Even with her first clenched tight, there is a faint orange glow pulsing around Ember's hand.

EMBER
This?
I was so angry that I had to take something from Solara. So I stole this jewelry off her.

Ember slowly untenses her hand, revealing a flawless gemstone shimmering with warm radiance.

GALAX
Ember, that is no mere bauble. That's a Divine Spark!
That gem contains a portion of Solara's godly essence. Infinitesimal, but… significant.

SYLPHIE
That's a Divine Spark? I only heard of them in stories my Mom told, where Solara would gift one when humanity needed a true miracle.

Do you think… we could use it to cast Divine Magic? Not bringing back the Sun, but… copying a tiny bit of it?

GALAX
It will take research. It will take toil, and experimentation, and failure. But I believe if we work together… yes, there is a way.

EMBER
Then… this is useful?

SYLPHIE
Oh, Ember. I'm so sorry for everything you lost, and I'm sorry that you lost hope in getting it back.

But you've given us hope, which… I haven't felt for a long time.

EMBER
Then that's enough. I'll defeat Solara again. And I'll get you more of those Divine Sparks.
